Domestic
violence is a pattern of coercive behavior that can include physical,
sexual,
emotional, spiritual and psychological tactics used by one partner to
gain and
maintain power and control over their intimate partner.
Domestic violence affects people who are married, divorced, living together, dating, and in gay or lesbian relationships. Also included are people from all social, economic, racial, religious, and ethnic groups. Anyone can be a victim but women are by far the most common victims.
Many times
women are not sure if they are being abused. Maybe you haven't been
seriously
injured or you haven't been hit at all. Domestic violence is about more
than
physical violence – it's about control.
If your
partner ...
- Makes you feel
afraid
- Isolates you
from family and friends
- Puts you down
- Is
extremely jealous or possessive
...then maybe you are being abused.
